Skype Fax

   By Matt Gerchow
Skype Fax is possible if you know how to set it up...

I put together an easy how-to tutorial that will show you exactly how to do it.

In my business, I use skype every single day.  I wanted to connect my fax send and receive there as well.  On the next page, you will find step-by-step instructions on how I set it all up.

The real trick is using an online fax service to get the job done.

How does Skype work?

The internet brought with it many new technologies. Things we often take for granted in our daily lives.  One of those new four letter words is VOIP or voice over internet protocol

In the pre-internet world, you had to connect analog lines, and those lines had to connect to physical locations in the real world. In the digital world, those connecting points were now as simple as someone's personal computer, or email for that matter.

However, digital (VOIP) lines are able to send and recieve a lot more than just voice.  Services like Skype let you send files, share video screens and maintain an ongoing personal chat connection over several months.

Before Skype, it was kind of the wild wild west in VOIP land.  Getting minutes and making calls had the look and feel of purchasing calling cards.

How to Send a Fax

Skype specializes in making calls and sending files between personal computers.
But when you send a fax, you are using the FOIP or fax over internet protocol.

Unlike a scratchy conversation, faxes require a consistent connection throughout the entire transmission.

So, while you might be able to transfer a 50mb file, that 400kb fax cannot be easily sent via Skype.

Why?  Because at some point, almost every fax has to touch an analog connection point.  In simple terms, someone is touching the dial pad or pulling the completed fax from a physical machine.

RingCentral appears to service the best of both worlds.

I still use skype every day, but for faxes I simply send and receive from my email address…just as I would an email.

If you move around a lot, and let's face it, we all should probably be in more motion…your ability to send and receive a fax from your emails will greatly expand your mobility.

Think of the caterpillar and the butterfly.  The transformed caterpillar has so much more freedom than the once teathered butterfly. Having "on the go" resources available to you will greatly expand your capabilities as well.
